The Earth is over 4 billion years old, so if there had been various times in which humanity has made the climb from the stone-age to the space-age more than once, that would be unsettling for several people. How would anyone today know either way if there was or wasn't ancient high-tech civilizations.
Today there are some people that would like to have an intentional RESET. However, a RESET could be caused by a world war or a planetary scale natural disaster.

If there was an ancient high-tech civilization on Mars, it might be too distressing to reveal that to the public. What if there was an ancient war in the heavens, or an asteroid or meteor crashed into Mars?
