There really are mountain men & hermits of all sorts, someone like Mr. Gas-mask can be difficult to confirm, especially if he wants to be very elusive. Perhaps most of them are benign, if not harmless. However, there are also strange & mysterious mountain_men that aren't just living off the land, like in yesteryear. Of course, some of them are ferociously bearded, stinky & monstrous.
