The concept of consciousness, human or otherwise, from another dimension or plane of existence, is a difficult thing to prove. The Paranormal can be anything that is too mysterious or unproven that occasionally might intersect with this reality.
Being open minded and curious about various mysteries & anomalies is a good start. Of course being very skeptical about everything can lead to its own data filtering problems. However, conventional science can only take one to the Fringe. After that its science fiction, speculation and conjecture... Thus, to really question the nature of reality (TNOR) can lead one down many paths.
